Early Life
*Born in Hamburg, Germany and grew up in a rural area north of Berlin.
*Father was a Lutheran Pastor and her Mother was a teacher of English and Latin.
*Her father was said to have sympathetic views with the communist regime in East Germany, which afforded her family luxuries such as having cars, and having the ability to easily travel between East and West Germany.
*As with most pupils in East Germany at the time, Merkel would go on to become a member of the socialist-led movement, Free German Youth (FDJ).
*Became a member of the district board and secretary for ‘Agitprop’ (portmanteau for agitation and propaganda) for the Free German Youth group.
*Even though many in the Free Germany Youth group were brought up to have atheist views, Merkel stood by her religion.
*She excelled in the areas of languages, math, and sciences in school.
*She studied physics in college from 1973 – 1978.
*She went on to study chemistry, earning her doctorate degree and becoming a chemist in research.
