Critics
*One of her first major critics seemed to be the man that labeled her his protégé, Helmut Kohl. While he had entrusted her with a ton of responsibility, he famously called her das Mädchen, or “the Girl.” While he may have not meant it to be degrading, to treat women like children is just another way of putting us as second-class citizens.
*Some feel that Merkel has not stepped in to fix the Eurozone financial crisis quick enough.
*In a story posted very recently about Merkel’s policies, many are unhappy that she seems to be telling other European countries to save money while Germany goes on what has been dubbed a “spending spree”.
*Germany has recently taken on what many consider controversial policies in regards to money that include things such as increased allowances for pensioners, axed fees at doctors’ surgeries, introduced a controversial €100 a month payment for stay at home mothers and upped the transport budget by €750 million.
*Merkel has also caught heat for her comments about the German Multicultural Society, because she had said that they “utterly failed” because as of right now, the approach has been to, “…simply live side by side and live happily with each other…”
*Merkel feels that immigrants into Germany should be required to learn German and live by Germany’s cultural norms. While this is a pretty standard feeling among many Germans, some have called Merkel’s comments “out of touch with reality”, and also that her black-and-white statements do not at all show that Merkel has any idea of how people are actually living.
*Even with all of her critics, her approval rating is currently sitting at a high 66%.
